Historical references

This variety is likely the old "Latina bianca" or oMinutola" described by Fojo (1875) in the Bitonto area (Bari province, Apulia region). It was confused and overlapped with Fiano for a long time, and indicatd also as Fiano aromatico o Fiano puglese.

For its particular aromatic traits, this genotype was recovered and valorized in Valle d'Itria especially thanks to "I Pastini"  winery, located in Locorotondo (Bari province), area where this variety is also known as Fiano minutolo (Carparelli et al., 2006).

After genetic, ampelographic, viticltural and chemical studies, (Calò et al., 2001; Di Stefano et al., 2001; Giannini et al., 2006; de Palma et al., 2009), this genotype was distinguished definitely by Fiano and it was enrolled into the Italian Register of Grapevine Varieties in 2011.

distribution & variation

This variety is clasified as apt to be grown, in the Apulia region, in the provinces of Barletta-Andria-Trani, Bari, Taranto, Brindisi e Lecce.

It is admitted into the IGT Puglia, Daunia, Murgia, Salento, Tarantino, Valle d'Itria.

technological use

Minutolo gapes show a quite slow sugar accumulation.

The berry skin is thin and sensitive to odium and botrytis attacks; this fact imposes an accurate plant prptection and limits the possibilit to delay the grape harvest.

The musts show a not negligible content of polyphenols and catechins.

The wines have a pale yellow color with greenish nuences. They are rich are rich in floral scents, especially of rose, but also in citrus and green apple scents, joint to notes of honey and candied fruits.

The wine taste is fresh, long lasting and coplex as well as its aroma. Flavors of apple, candied pineapple emerge, with a slightly bitter aftertaste.

About six months after bottling, the wine oxygenated at room temperature is enriched with resinous notes (Carparelli et al., 2006).
