Dolciola is a very rare grape in the territory of Reggio Emilia (northern Italy) where its precence dates back at least to the late eighteenth century. Dalla Fossa (1811) cites the Dolciole between black grape varieties that believes, as other varieties (Ferraresi, Nigrare, Nigriselle, Schiochette, Covre, Rossare) very productive, but not satisfactory from the point of view of quality, proposing the replacement. Later, additional mentions are not available, while an homonymous white grape variety is reported by Bertozzi (1840) in the list of grapes grown in Reggio Emilia in the dialect version Dolzola, and is inserted among the dialect names listed by Franceschini and Premuda (1922).
