Ampelographic note

Questo vitigno, a dispetto della sua antica coltivazione, ha fatto rilevare, nel corso delle indagini sulla valorizzazione delle varietà autoctone siciliane, una ridotta variabilità intravarietale. Questa risultato è plausibilmente dovuto alla drastica contrazione della superficie, coltivata con questo vitigno, successivamente all’avvento della fillossera che ha causato la perdita della variabilità intravarietale preesistente. Nonostante questi presupposti è stato possibile definire due biotipi che si caratterizzano per alcuni aspetti della morfologia dell’acino ed in particolare per le sue dimensioni, definendo così due biotipi biotipo A ad acino grande e biotipo B ad acino piccolo.
